Area antifascists have positively identified Erin Gurel, a 29 year old Turkish national and Tristate (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York) resident, as a Neo-Nazi and member of S14. Gurel is in like company, as six other members of S14, have been exposed this year for being Nazi trash. This includes its two leaders Mark Kauffman and Sara Sheaffer as well as members Mathew Bair, Daisy McGowan, Paul Minton, and Jackson Bradley.
Gurel first came to the attention of Tristate antifascists area in 2023, via his Telegram activity. Though his exact identity was unknown at the time, antifascists pinned down Gurel’s now defunct Telegram profile, FlannelHistorian, as an emerging regular participant in S14 and NJEHA activities.
Antifascists noted the content of FlannelHistorian’s profile and were able to match the likeness of the account owner, to an individual often present at S14 and NJEHA actions. Across months of actions, FlannelHistorian became easy to identify due to his habit of wearing two or three different variations of the same outfit, which includes khaki or camo styled pants, a particular skull balaclava, black suspenders, two slightly different pairs of brown leather shoes, and a black t-shirt.
At some point in 2023, Gurel abandoned the FlannelHistorian Telegram account in favor of a new account under the username Anatolpinist, likely due to operational security (opsec) concerns. Gurel had made the mistake of using his legal first name in the description of his FlannelHistorian account. Antifascists identified Anatolpinist’s and FlannelHistorian’s account owners as being one-in-the-same due to similarities in how the accounts were run and how they interacted with other S14 members.
The irony here though is that despite trying to improve his opsec on his fascist accounts, Gurel ignored security measures on his personal social media accounts. Recently, Gurel created an Anatolpinist tag in the bio of his public facing private Instagram account.
At the time of publishing it’s not clear why he did this, but the decision to do so enabled antifascists to thread everything together and positively identify FlannelHistorian/Anatolpinist as Erin Gurel. Like other S14 members before him, Gurel’s own arrogance is what ultimately led to his unmasking.
Once Gurel was positively identified, antifascists uncovered that Gurel has been a Neo-Nazi since at least 2017, and posts about his National Socialist beliefs on different Turkish social media platforms. It’s unclear how Gurel originally linked up with Tristate area fascists, but it has been verified that he’s been publicly active in the region since 2022.
In 2022, Gurel first joined the National Socialist Youth Alliance (NSYA) via Telegram. Gurel became quickly acquainted with Kauffman, detailing that they had in fact lived in the same area of New England but were not familiar with one another at that time. Specifically, Gurel had lived in Milford, New Hampshire for several years until 2021 and bounced around to Brooklyn, NY and Istanbul, Turkey afterwards.
In 2022 Gurel started getting closer to other S14 members, discussing his ethnicity and nationality. At first, Gurel’s Turkish identity caused a stir within S14 and their allied crews, as some did not believe he could claim “white” identity. As a self proclaimed history buff, Gurel was quick to defend himself, linking a Telegram channel he created just to prove that Turkish people are white. This point of contention resulted in some S14 members leaving the organization as S14 chose to accept Gurel as white.
During this time Gurel also discussed the different blue collar trade work he has done over the years. While Gurel is a certified locksmith, he currently does not utilize this certification for work. Instead he is pursuing a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and works in commercial driving for a prominent shipping company.
As he became friendlier with the group, Gurel got together with Kauffman and D’ambly and became involved in person, attending actions sporadically in 2022. Gurel then aligned himself with Kauffman when the NSYA split and Kauffman formed the offshoot organization S14 in early 2023. It is surmised that during this period of his life Gurel moved back to the Tristate area, continuing his career in commercial driving, as at this time he became heavily involved in in-person S14 events and actions.
While Gurel’s specific location in the Tristate area for most of 2023 is murky, as of December 2023 it has been confirmed that Gurel is looking to move back to New York City. Gurel has been spotted posting inquires on public FaceBook housing groups looking for roommates in the Queens and Forest Hills area. Oddly, Gurel has also made public posts on Jewish community housing FaceBook groups looking for roommates.
Prior to the publishing of this piece, local antifascists connected with several Jewish community housing groups and have notified them of Gurel’s presence and status as a Neo-Nazi. While Jewish and other marginalized communities have been made aware, it is still unclear as to why Gurel is choosing to do this. Regardless though, if Gurel is spotted on any housing forum or public group on social media it is requested that he be reported with this article linked to admins. Additionally, it is speculated that Gurel will be looking for a job in his field during the coming weeks as he relocates to NYC. Concerned residents are encouraged to keep an eye out on major shipping and commercial driving employers such as Amazon, FedEx, UPS, DHL, and others in case Gurel appears on any rosters.
Gurel has had the privilege of living a quiet life. So far he has been able to go freely out into the world and be a Neo-Nazi without consequences. This sense of security has even made him bolder in recent months. That time is now over.
